UFO SIGHTINGS - the other shows.

Image
As promised, this week is a round up of all the props from Gerry Anderson’s UFO that I’ve found in other shows and films. There will be no Doctor Who, but I keep finding these things and felt the need to really wrap up this avenue of prop hunting. The list here is as broad as it is long and really demonstrates just how ubiquitous these items were. I’ve organised it into prop type rather than by time. And I’ll kick it off with a favourite… WIDE BLUE - as seen in THE GREEN DEATH, THE TIME WARRIOR, THE ANDROIDS OF TARA, and DESTINY OF THE DALEKS plus episodes of THE GOODIES and of course UFO. JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN / DOPPELGÄNGER, 1969 As mentioned last week, despite me calling them UFO props they actually come from the earlier Anderson live action feature film Doppelgänger. The wide blue computer unit is on the right hand side of this screen grab. CARRY ON LOVING, 1970 ACE OF WANDS, 1972 BLAKES 7, 1979 From the season 2 episode Killer. On the face of it, this is not the same...

TALL BLUE

Image
As promised last week, this one is a return to the props of Gerry Anderson’s UFO. Back in March I published several posts covering the many props from that show that ended up in episodes of Doctor Who. One prop I covered was a squat, wide bodied, blue computer. It appeared in The Green Death, The Time Warrior and other stories. Well, that prop has a taller cousin that so far I haven’t looked at. So here are the Doctor Who appearances of tall blue. TALL BLUE ON THE LEFT, WIDE BLUE ON THE RIGHT Like Ant and Dec, they stand in this order so you can remember which is which. JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN / DOPPELGÄNGER, 1969 Any time I’ve covered the UFO props I have always referred to them as just that, UFO props. As it was Anderson’s first live action TV show I had wrongly assumed they had originated on UFO. However before he made UFO, Anderson made a feature film. And many of the familiar objects from the world of SHADO actually first appeared there. Known as Doppelgänger in the UK...

QUICK UPDATE AUGUST

Image
Hey folks. It’s time for another quick update, rounding up additional finds of props I have already posted about. Let’s dive straight in.  THE TOMORROW PEOPLE, 1975 A couple of people mentioned that the prop panel that had appeared in a Bond flick also turns up in Thames Television’s kids SF show The Tomorrow People. The panel appears in the hero’s lab. This screen grab is from season 3 tale The Revenge of Jedikiah. Thanks to Rob Lubbock for pointing me to this. MORONS FROM OUTER SPACE, 1985 Some familiar props can be seen in this screen grab from the mid eighties British comedy Morons From Outer Space. The arrows point to two of the consoles that were seen in Attack of the Cybermen and an Ultravox music video. The one on the left has columns of lights and the one on the right has a circular monitor. Incidentally, the console next to the one the right also turns up in the first episode of…. RED DWARF, 1988 When I was originally looking from these consoles this one had been sugge...

DOME’S DAY

Image
Hey! This one is a prop I’ve been putting off looking at since I started this blog. The dome topped ‘computer’ thingy is one of the more well known objects of sixties Doctor Who. I imagine that there are many fans that know far more about it than I do. Now this has often been the case with props I have looked at, but this was one I wanted to get right if I could. I have heard it said that there are actually two different domed computers, but I haven’t been able to separate out the examples I have seen. If you know anything about this one please let me know but in the meantime here are the appearances I am aware of. CURSE OF THE FLY, 1965 The earliest appearance I’m aware of is actually not from Doctor Who. The Curse of the Fly was a British made sequel to the classic sci-fi horror flick, The Fly. Filmed at Shepperton, it features a few familiar Doctor Who props. THE SPACE MUSEUM, 1965 The Curse of the Fly had a UK release in the May of 1965. At basically the same time the domed computer...

TROUGHTON TOAST RACK TAKE 2

Image
Hello folks! I’ve been away this week so I haven’t had any time to go looking for old props. But I do have a quick update I can share. A few weeks ago I wrote about these little toast rack like props that pop up during the Troughton era.  Well I’ve found a few more. So here we go. TIME SQUAD, 1978 I have to confess I’m not the world’s biggest Blake’s 7 fan. In fact I’m not really very familiar with it at all. But it is an obvious place to go looking for Doctor Who props and it’s in the series 1 episode Time Squad that I found the toast racks. They may well turn up in other episodes but, as I say, it’s not a show I’m familiar with. If you have any ideas please get in touch. WARRIORS GATE, 1981 I’ve circled the toast racks in this Warriors Gate screen grab as they are not the easiest to spot. In fact I think the scene depicted here is the only clear look we get in the whole story. It’s from part 3 and features Lazlo the Tharil with Romana in The Privateer. THE FIVE DOCTORS, 1983 And...
