DESTINY’S SLAVES TO FASHION

Image
Hey! This week I take a look at the Dalek’s slave labour from Destiny. This eclectic bunch are dressed in some familiar looking rags. They basically had whatever could be found in the stores. So let’s dive and see what we can spot. I’ll be highlighting the costumes that are being discussed in this ready brek style. This screen grab is from Destiny Part 4 and we can see a man in a blue and white futuristic suit. That suit comes from… PLANET OF EVIL, 1975 Destiny of the Daleks actually features two sets of slaves. The group on location was a different set of extras to those in the studio. Some of the costumes appear in both and the Morestran suit can be seen on the far left of this screen grab. It does seem to have lost its belt between the location and the studio.  FRONTIER IN SPACE, 1973 The Morestran suit isn’t the only familiar costume in the Destiny screen grab above. As you can see below the Draconian costume from Frontier (minus the belt and jewel) is also present.  And t...

KANANGA CONTROLS

Image
The name’s Bond, James Bond. Yes that’s right, this week’s prop is from the world of that famous fictional British spy, James Bond. It’s this control panel here and it’s found in the underground lair of Dr. Kananga from Live and Let Die. LIVE AND LET DIE, 1973 Here it is on screen. In the film Bond taps on a tombstone with a sword and that signals to the henchman to give him access to the lair. THE ARK IN SPACE, 1975 Two years later this control panel starts to turn up in Doctor Who. You can see it on the right of this screen grab from The Ark in Space. PLANET OF EVIL, 1975 The following season two of these panels turn up in Planet of Evil. One wall mounted and the other on a table. The one on the wall has been positioned upside down, at least compared to its other appearances. Here is a better look at the one on the table. THE INVISIBLE ENEMY, 1977 It’s another couple of years before we see this again. This time it’s in season 15’s The Invisible Enemy.  SPACE FALL, 1978 Blakes 7’s...

CUPBOARD LOVE

Image
This weeks props are cupboards that adorned many a set during the Pertwee era, made a bit of a comeback in the Davison era, and have even appeared in Nu Who. Often paired with a row of circular oven like knobs as seen below, these cupboards made for a quick and easy set dressing for everything from spaceships to submarines. Here are all of the Doctor Who appearances I have been able to find. As always, if you know of any others please do get in touch.  THE AMBASSADORS OF DEATH, 1970 The earliest example I have found is from Pertwee’s first season. The cupboards, along with the circles, can be seen behind the seats in Recovery 7. Keep in mind their orientation here. For this story the circular controls are above the cupboards. But, as we will see in other examples, there was a lot of variety in how these were displayed. THE SEA DEVILS, 1972 This story features the cupboards on two sets. First, in the above picture, in Trenchards office (complete with telephones) and second…. …. on b...
