RESPECT YOUR ELDAs

Image
This week on Instagram I posted pictures with a ‘seating’ theme. One of them featured this designer chair  This is an Elda chair designed by Joe Columbo in the Sixties. I normally shy away from posting about ‘real world’ items that you could conceivably buy (if you happened to have a spare 10K). Partly because when you see it in multiple shows it’s unlikely to be the same prop. And partly because other people have covered this very well elsewhere. When it comes to chairs the absolute key source is Tim Dickinson’s sublime Pink For Your Actual Pterodactyl . I’m indebted to Tim for the information in this post. Other blogs Film and Furniture and catacombs.space1999.net also proved to be invaluable. THE WHEEL IN SPACE, 1968 Here’s that picture I mentioned at the top. It’s a really familar image of Zoe in a massive chair. But I’d never noticed how much that chair turns up elsewhere.  THE WHEEL IN SPACE, 1968 Here’s another image from Wheel so you can see the whole thing. DAY OF T...

SILVER FRISBEES

Image
Hello folks! I must apologise for the lateness of this post. I usually like to get something out every weekend, but just didn’t have anything ready last week. Hopefully I should be back to a regular schedule this coming weekend. In the meantime here is a short post about chrome discs! I know, I know, I spoil you guys. THE POWER OF THE DALEKS, 1966 The objects we are looking at are the large chrome discs at appear on the arches of the Dalek capsule. If you are not sure what I’m referring to, they are on the left of this image. An arch of five of these discs are to the left of the door. And a further three discs can be seen in a row behind. I’m calling these ‘silver frisbees’. THE WHEEL IN SPACE, 1968 A couple of years later and the frisbees are used as set dressing once more. COLONY IN SPACE, 1971 This is the last appearance I have found. And it’s possible I might be going out in a limb with this one. But I think the silver frisbees are used on the front of IMC’s space buggies.  UPD...

DOME’S DAY

Image
Hey! This one is a prop I’ve been putting off looking at since I started this blog. The dome topped ‘computer’ thingy is one of the more well known objects of sixties Doctor Who. I imagine that there are many fans that know far more about it than I do. Now this has often been the case with props I have looked at, but this was one I wanted to get right if I could. I have heard it said that there are actually two different domed computers, but I haven’t been able to separate out the examples I have seen. If you know anything about this one please let me know but in the meantime here are the appearances I am aware of. CURSE OF THE FLY, 1965 The earliest appearance I’m aware of is actually not from Doctor Who. The Curse of the Fly was a British made sequel to the classic sci-fi horror flick, The Fly. Filmed at Shepperton, it features a few familiar Doctor Who props. THE SPACE MUSEUM, 1965 The Curse of the Fly had a UK release in the May of 1965. At basically the same time the domed computer...

TROUGHTON TOAST RACK

Image
After several weeks of looking at stuff from the seventies and eighties, this post will take us straight back to the sixties. I’ve been looking for this pill shaped object that seems to have been a favourite of designers during the Troughton years. I feel this might have been a real world item once upon a time but I’m at a loss as to what it could have been. If you have any ideas I’d be very grateful if you reached out.  In the meantime here is a list of the appearances I have spotted.  THE MOONBASE, 1967 A couple of the appearances I have found are pretty hard to spot. And this first one is one of them. I’m almost certain that the pill shaped props appear on the walls of the sickbay. However they are too high up and the walls are too far back. So we do not get a good look at them in either the publicity stills or the existing episodes themselves. I’ve circled the prop I think is the correct one above. So I’ll leave it to you to decide if I’m right or not. FURY FROM THE DEEP, ...
