THE HELMETS *twang* OF DEATH!

Image
Hello folks! This week on my Instagram I have been posting pictures of Classic Who space suits. And whenever I thinking about spacesuits and astronauts I will always consult the excellent blog Say Hello Spaceman  This prop hunt entry is very much indebted to Steve of SHS and his excellent research into the helmets used in The Ambassadors of Death.  MOON ZERO TWO, 1969 The helmets from Ambassadors started life in the Hammer Films science fiction movie Moon Zero Two. Pictured here are James Olsen and Catherine Schell (a very beautiful women, probably) THE AMBASSADORS OF DEATH, 1970 A year after their big screen debut they are pressed into service for Doctor Who. Unlike many of the other appearances listed here, Who only used the helmet and not the completed suit. It is mainly identifiable by the raised area at the chin. HERE COME THE DOUBLE DECKERS!, 1970 The same year several of the colourful Moon Zero Two suits appeared in this British/American co-produced kids show.  SPA...

WHO WORE IT BETTER

Image
This week we dive into the dressing up box and look at just some of the reused classic Who costumes. Each of the outfits or accessories here appeared in two stories. Which begs the question - Who wore it better? MARCO POLO, 1964 Starting with a well known one. This outfit worn by Marco Polo (Mark Eden) was also worn by…. THE CELESTIAL TOYMAKER, 1966 … The Toymaker (Michael Gough). MARCO POLO, 1964 And sticking with Marco Polo, the blue tunic Mark Eden sports here later appeared in… THE CRUSADE, 1965 ….The Crusade, where it is worn by Richard the Lionheart (Julian Glover) THE DALEKS’ MASTER PLAN, 1965 Next up is the clash of the medallion men! From DMP it’s Zephon (Julian Sherrier). THE WAR GAMES, 1969 And from The War Games it’s the War Chief (Edward Brayshaw) PLANET OF THE DALEKS, 1973 On to the seventies and these marvellous sickly yellow space suits worn by the Thals.  THE ANDROID INVASION, 1975 And here we have Guy Crayford (Milton Johns) with one of those suits. THE ROBOTS OF ...

A MUSEUM PIECE

Image
Hello folks! This weeks prop is one I figured would have turned up a bit more. There is a good chance I’ve missed plenty, but presented here are four appearances and I reckon that’s enough for a post! If you know of any more occasions this object turns up please do get in touch. The object in question is the wedge shaped console on the far right of the picture from The Space Museum. THE SPACE MUSEUM, 1965 Many of the props from this story were hired from a prop store, which makes sense when we see where this object appeared next. CURSE OF THE FLY, 1965 I previously mentioned this film in connection to that dome shaped thing in the middle of the picture. But behind it you can also see the wedge shaped console. DALEKS’ INVASION EARTH 2150 A.D, 1966 We get this lovely close up of the prop here, complete with added sticker - TOTAL POWER! COLONY IN SPACE, 1971 And here is the last appearance I have been able to find. As I say I’m sure there are more, so if you know of any please reach out. ...

SILVER FRISBEES

Image
Hello folks! I must apologise for the lateness of this post. I usually like to get something out every weekend, but just didn’t have anything ready last week. Hopefully I should be back to a regular schedule this coming weekend. In the meantime here is a short post about chrome discs! I know, I know, I spoil you guys. THE POWER OF THE DALEKS, 1966 The objects we are looking at are the large chrome discs at appear on the arches of the Dalek capsule. If you are not sure what I’m referring to, they are on the left of this image. An arch of five of these discs are to the left of the door. And a further three discs can be seen in a row behind. I’m calling these ‘silver frisbees’. THE WHEEL IN SPACE, 1968 A couple of years later and the frisbees are used as set dressing once more. COLONY IN SPACE, 1971 This is the last appearance I have found. And it’s possible I might be going out in a limb with this one. But I think the silver frisbees are used on the front of IMC’s space buggies.
