TWO TICKETS TO THE GUN SHOW
It’s guns galore this week as I look at pairs of pistols, matching muskets, and coupled cannons! Each gun featured appears in either two Doctor Who stories OR Doctor Who and something else. Enjoy.
GALAXY 4, 1965
The long energy weapons of the Dravhins turn up ten years later in….
GENESIS OF THE DALEKS, 1975
…and the clear cube thing on the end turned out to be green. Who knew!
EARTHSHOCK, 1982
The Eighties Cyber-guns, created by freelance costumes and effects company Imagineering, were later cannibalised to appear in…..
WARRIORS OF THE DEEP, 1984
Careful Tarpok! You’ll have your hand off!
INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS, 1974
The Doctor’s dino stun gun actually first appeared in….
MADAME SIN, 1972
…. a fairly obscure British thriller starring Bette Davis, Robert Wagner, and Denholm Elliott. Interiors for this movie were completed at Pinewood and it seems likely the gun ended up in their prop store after filming was complete. Studios like Pinewood and Elstree would often rent out props to other productions as that’s probably how they ended up in Doctor Who.
THE THREE DOCTORS, 1973
I might be stretching the definition of a gun with this one. But it has a long pointy bit and shoots something so I reckon it counts. I was watching the blu ray of The Three Doctors recently and the info text said that parts of this device end up in….
THE MONSTER OF PELADON, 1974
…. but for ages I couldn’t see it. The sonic lance in Monster has a dish made of a metal mesh and in The Three Doctors prop it’s transparent plastic. That is until I spotted….
… the black triangular shape on the side of the lance. This can be seen on the top of The Three Doctors prop.
DEATH TO THE DALEKS, 1974
This last one is fairly well known now thanks to a fantastic video by the brilliant Dalek 63.88. If you haven’t seen it I’d highly recommend. Long story short, in Death, the Doctor removes one of the Daleks make shift guns to create a rifle like weapon. The elements at the front end of this gun are real life WW2 era armaments from Bapty, a prop house specialising in weapons. After the completion of Death this prop was returned to Bapty despite having BBC created elements. Specifically the Dalek ball in the middle of the gun. Bapty later provided props for….
A NEW HOPE, 1977
…. including the weird Dalek ball rifle prop. The Star Wars team added a scope and a handle but ultimately this new prop was not used on screen.
That’s all folks!
