NOVEMBER UPDATE

Hello folks! It’s time for another quick update covering new finds of props I have already looked at. Let’s jump straight in. 


The Prop Hunt blog turned one in October. One of the earliest props I looked at was The Master’s Iron Maiden TARDIS. In that post I mentioned I had found the Iron Maiden in The Avengers series 5 episode Murdersville. Well, I’ve noticed it’s also in the series 6 episode Fog.

I covered this toast rack shaped prop here , here , and even one here . So I thought I had it pretty well covered. But it seems I missed an appearance as no less than six of them turn up in The Dominators.

In this post I looked at the computer from the International Electromatic Company computer. There turned out to be a few variants of that prop that appear in The Ambassadors of Death and other places. Well, here’s one more variant I missed, this time from The Tenth Planet. The shape of the prop is the same but this version has four tapes rather than two.

One last prop to update. In this post I looked at a variety of grey boxy computer panels from the 1980s. The picture below is from the first episode of Red Dwarf and I have posted it before. That time I was looking at the computer terminal in the foreground. However, looking at it again I spotted the grey panels in the background. I have circled it here so you know what I’ve talking about.

This is not the post I had planned at all! I’ve been working on something else for a while. In fact I’m a bit late with that as the research has taken longer than normal. But in the meantime something popped up and I just had to share it. Friday evenings on our house are filled with the BBC4 repeats of Top of the Pops. One of the episodes this week, from May 1984, featured something that made me point at my telly like Leonardo DiCarprio. It was this trio of consoles. But what Doctor Who stories feature these props and why were they on Top of the Pops? First let’s look at their Doctor Who appearances. HEXAGONS!

Nothing quite says ‘science fiction’ more than putting hexagons all over your walls. This design, first seen in The Mutants, pops up throughout the 70s and 80s. In this post I tried to catalogue all of its appearances in classic Doctor Who. Next week for part 2 I will cover the other shows it appears in.  THE MUTANTS, 1972 As mentioned, this story is widely considered to be the origin of this prop. I have checked to see if I can find an earlier appearance but have drawn a blank. THE MUTANTS ORIGINAL DESIGN DRAWING BY JEREMY BEAR As you can see in this original production drawing, the hexagons were always part of the design. THE STONES OF BLOOD, 1978 Rather surprisingly the hexagons don’t appear again for another six years. NIGHTMARE OF EDEN, 1979 Once they did return in the late seventies they were back for good. SEARCHING FOR SPIRALS

Season Eight opener, Terror of the Autons, features a nifty new laboratory for the Doctor. And lurking in the back is a rather interesting spiral staircase. Interesting because it seems to turn up in all manner of other shows.  TERROR OF THE AUTONS, 1971 STEPTOE AND SON, 1962 The earliest I have been able to find the stairs is from the original run of Steptoe and Son, from 1962-65. They can be regularly spotted in the Steptoe’s junkyard, just next to their front door. READY STEADY GO!, 1965 Scottish pop pixie Lulu starts her performance of ‘Shout’ on a familiar set of stairs in a 1965 edition of Associated-Redifussions music show Ready Steady Go! In truth, I’m not 100% certain this is the same staircase. The shape of the steps and the balusters is correct but this staircase feels longer and sturdier than the other examples I have found.
