UFO Sightings, Part 2
It’s part 2 of my round up of Gerry Anderson props in Classic Who. If you haven’t seen it, please check out part 1 here. Last time I was looking at just one prop, this time it’s a few different items. So let’s dive in.
MOONBASE DESK CONTROL PANEL - FOUND IN ‘THE STONES OF BLOOD’, 1978
The centre piece of the UFO Moonbase set is a large circular desk. In a previous post I mentioned that it features heavily in The Green Death. Well, the curved control panel from this prop also turns up in The Stones of Blood.
UFO WAIST HEIGHT BROWN TAPE UNIT THING - FOUND IN THE ARMAGEDDON FACTOR, 1978
This is another one that also appeared in The Green Death. It’s at this point I should mention that the names I have given these props are entirely my invention. Just in case you were thinking UFO waist height brown tape unit thing was written in some paperwork somewhere.
SUPERMARIONATION TAPES
This is the first prop I’m looking at which has come from one of Anderson’s puppet shows rather than the live action UFO. It’s the blue computer behind Captain Scarlet in the image above. But not all of it! The bit I am interested in is the black rectangle with the white tapes and the orange markings down the side. This crops up in several Doctor Who stories. Below are all the examples I have found. Many thanks to Zoe’s Feather Boa for pointing out this prop to me.
INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS, 1974
The tape can be seen here between Martin Jarvis and Peter Miles.
THE ARK IN SPACE, 1975
Several of these tape units are built into the walls of the Nerva Beacon.
UNDERWORLD, 1978
Harder to spot but it’s in the back of this image next to James Maxwell.
RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS, 1984
Still going strong into the Eighties.
UFO DESKS
It’s yet another UFO prop that turned up in The Green Death. And just like the others, it’s not the only story it appears in.
THE MONSTER OF PELADON, 1974
The desk is seen on the left of this set photo from Monster. On the right is a smaller desk that also really looks like it’s from UFO but I’ve yet to find a match for it.
THE FACE OF EVIL, 1977
That’s the last one for today. Thanks for reading. I’ll be back next week with part 3.
