THE GREAT GREEN DEATH UFO PROP HUNT

Following my recent post about Gerry Anderson’s UFO I wanted to take a look at a typical Doctor Who story of the mid-Seventies to see just how much material came from that show. So here is an examination of just two sets from The Green Death highlighting everything I have found. The sets are the Global Chemicals Computer Room, home of BOSS, and the smaller Pumping Room.

Here are some views of these sets. I have numbered each of the UFO props I have found.

THE GREEN DEATH, 1973
(Images 1-5: Computer Room, Image 6: Pumping Room)

Below I have presented more information about these props. The cut out image on the left is from The Green Death and the image on the right is from UFO. Hopefully using these images and the Green Death pictures above you can see how they match.
NUMBER 1 - THE UFO MOONBASE DESK

In the middle of Global Chemicals Computer Room is probably the most obvious prop from UFO. This large circular desk is featured throughout UFO’s run as the centrepiece of their Moonbase operations. While some of the UFO props are recontexualised or displayed in different ways, this desk appears unaltered from its SHADO origins.
NUMBER 2 - THE BLUE COMPUTER UNITS

These units are responsible for kick starting my look at the props of UFO. You can read about my findings here
NUMBER 3 - SKYDIVER COMPUTER.

Skydiver is SHADO’s Submarine. Like all their vehicles and bases it’s chock-a-block full of fancy sciencey looking gear. One such item is this tall red and cream computer unit that can be found at the back of the Global Chemicals set.
NUMBER 4 - A PAIR OF LONG RECTANGULAR PANELS

Like the blue computers at number 2, these long panels were featured in my previous post. They appear throughout UFO and are either wall mounted or displayed stacked in pairs on desks. It’s one of these pairs that’s been attached to the walls in the Computer Room. They are positioned above the area where the Doctor sits when BOSS is trying to possess him.
NUMBER 5 - SMALL COMPUTER UNIT, SHADO HQ.

In the foreground of the UFO image above you can see two small brown cabinets placed back to back. One of these units is similarly framed in the foreground of the Global Chemicals Computer Room set. In the picture below you might just be able to pick out the text that says - FAST ACCESS (10’ BIT) DRUM STORE TYPE RM 15. This text is unchanged from its appearance in UFO.
NUMBER 6 - THE DALOTEK AFFAIR DESK

We are now moving out of the Global Chemicals Computer Room and into their Pumping Room. The main item in this set is a desk full of lights and switches. UFO has loads of this type of desk but I believe I have found an exactly match in the episode The Dalotek Affair. As you can see below, The Green Death features a nice big close up of the desk to be able to compare the two.
NUMBER 7 - PANEL FROM THE ALBATROSS

The UFO episode Sub-Smash featured the SHADO rescue craft the Albatross. On the wall of this set is a typical panel featuring lights, switches and a small monitor. It’s not very easy to see but this panel appears, upside down, in the Pumping Room. Here’s a more complete image of that set. The panel can be seen to the right of the large blue pipe.

So that’s a total of seven different UFO props found in this one story. But that’s not all I have found so I shall be back next week with a second The Green Death themed post. Until then thanks for reading.
