UFO Sightings, Part 3
Hello folks! I’ll start by saying I think this is my last Gerry Anderson themed post for now. I have one more avenue to look into but otherwise I think this one covers everything that I know about and haven’t posted so far. And I’ll start with a well known one.
THIRD DOCTOR’S SONIC
The Sonic Scewdriver was actually created by combining two Gerry Anderson props. The main body is a full sized prop from the film Thunderbirds Are Go and the topper is from the Captain Scarlet episode, Model Spy. Like all of the props I have featured so far, these were obtained by the BBC in the early Seventies when Century 21 closed its doors.

SMALL BLUE TICKER TAPE THINGY in SHADO CONTROL ROOM
To the left of George Sewell in the UFO screen grab above is a small blue unit that spews out a ream of ticker tape. This turns up in the laboratory of Professor Whitaker.

TALL RED TRIMMED UNIT in SHADO CONTROL ROOM
Tucked away in the corner, this tall unit looks a little more old school than most of the UFO props. This one crops up in The Time Warrior.

JOE 90, TALKDOWN, 1969
Like the Sonic Screwdriver, this is another one I had previously posted about several years ago on my Instagram. This model got a paint job and was reused in Colony in Space. I’m sure there are probably more Anderson models that made it to Doctor Who but so far I haven’t found them.

This next one is a little unusual. As I mention above, the BBC acquired all of this material when Century 21 Television Productions closed its doors. That happened in 1972 but these next examples are from Space 1999 which didn’t debut until 1975. So I have no idea how this happened but it is pretty cool. In Nightmare of Eden, Tryst’s CET machine shows us a number of planets before we see Eden. These were all model sets that had featured in Space 1999. Below you can see the Space 1999 version on the left and the Nightmare of Eden on the right.

MONSTER OF PELADON MINI UFO DESK
Last time I posted this image from The Monster of Peladon. In particular I mentioned the small desk on the right. I said I was certain it was from UFO but hadn’t found it. Well now I have, and it was in the SHADO control room all along. The image below is from the episode Mindbender.
And that’s not all I found cos….
THE MUTANTS, 1972
That’s it folks. I’ll see you soon with something new.
